Vernon "Vern" Manion passed away on September 13, 2026. Vern was born on April 2, 1930 the son of Jack and Mary Manion in Iola, Kansas. He was raised in Chanute, Kansas and a member of the graduating class of 1948.

After high school, Vern worked as a Santa Fe Railroad telegrapher in Kansas and a linotype operator in Oklahoma before joining the United States Navy in 1951. Vern served aboard the USS Tucker as a 3rd Class Fire Control Technician and leading division petty officer until his honorable discharge in 1955. After his discharge, his career included working as a postal carrier in Junction City, a refinery technician, a linotype operator for the Junction City Union and the Manhattan Mercury, and later as production manager throughout many system changes into the digital age. Alongside his work within these two communities he worked as an electrician on the side and helped many community members along the way.

Vern married his beloved wife Emma in 1955 in Chanute, Kansas and they later moved to Junction City, Kansas. Family and friends were an important part of his life. Many knew him as someone who never met a stranger and would always take time out of his day to meet new people.

Vern loved fishing and hunting, a hobby that began with his father during childhood and until his father's passing. He continued this with his daughter, BJ, and her husband Ross and many friends. He always embraced new technology and learning how things work. Vern lived by a standard of "always do your best, no matter what you're doing, whether it's your job, your studies, or your daily life." He was a prime example of this throughout his life.

Vern is survived by his daughter BJ and her husband Ross Manes; cousin Linda Lucke; brother-in-law Don Haynes; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins who will remember his generosity and compassion.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Mary Manion; wife Emma, grandson Jason Bokelman; brother-in-law Ron Haynes; sisters-in-law Margaret Haynes, Lois Haynes, Carol Haynes, and Helen Haynes.
