Rocky W. Johnson, a devoted family man, respected educator, and proud veteran, passed away on May 30, 2026, in Junction City, Kansas. Born on January 23, 1945, in Portland, Oregon, Rocky's life was marked by unwavering dedication to his country, his family, and the pursuit of knowledge.
Rocky's commitment to service was evident early in his life when he joined the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He honorably served for 20 years, retiring as a Sergeant First Class (E-7). His military career was among his proudest accomplishments, alongside surviving a heart transplant—an ordeal that defied expectations and extended his life beyond the anticipated three years. Following his recovery, he devoted significant time to volunteer work with the Transplant Network, passionately advocating for organ donation and raising awareness about its critical importance.
After retiring from active military service, Rocky pursued higher education with the same determination that defined his career and personal life. He earned a Master’s degree in Continuing Adult Education from Kansas State University in 1995. His academic achievements paved the way for a fulfilling career as a professor at Cloud County Community College, where he taught business and computer applications. Through his teaching, Rocky influenced many students and colleagues, sharing not only his technical knowledge but also his values of independence and lifelong learning.
Rocky was known to be an independent loner who lived life on his own terms. Yet, he was also a loving husband, father, and grandfather. On February 28, 1981, he married Maris Atkinson in Manhattan, Kansas, a union that brought much joy and companionship. He cherished spending time with his wife Maris; step-son, Pete Sales; and their daughter, Tiffany Sales, along with her partner, Brad Stephens. Rocky’s pride and joy extended to his granddaughter, Samantha Stephens-Reed, with whom he shared special moments, including visits to museums to nurture her love of learning.
Family held a treasured place in Rocky’s heart. He is survived by his brothers, Gary (Sandy) Johnson of Ocean Shores, Washington, and Ted (Chris) Johnson of Sedro-Woolley, Washington, as well as his cousin Sheila Raymond and her daughter Natalie of Vancouver, Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Loraine Johnson, and his birth father, Henry L. Charley.
Those who knew Rocky fondly recall the memories created during family vacations, which often included cross-country road trips, hiking in the mountains, ferry rides, and any adventure that offered an escape from everyday life. His love of travel defined much of his life, especially before settling down after his military retirement.
A visitation to honor Rocky’s memory will be held on June 28, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Johnson & Mass-Hinitt Funeral Home, located at 203 N Washington St, Junction City, Kansas. A graveside service will be held on June 29, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, Manhattan, Kansas, with full military honors.
Rocky W. Johnson’s legacy is one of resilience, dedication, and love—a man who served his country with distinction, embraced education as a lifelong endeavor, and nurtured deep bonds with family. He will be remembered with great respect and gratitude by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
