Robert (Bob) P. Bryant, 63, of Junction City, Kansas, died November 28, 2009, at Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan, KS, following a short but courageous battle with lung and bone cancer. Memorial services will be held at 10 am at First Christian Church, 1429 St. Mary's Road, Junction City, KS on Friday, December 4, 2009. Inurnment with military honors will be held at Wetmore Cemetery, Wetmore, KS at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion, Junction City Elks Club or American Cancer Society in care of Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington, Junction City, KS 66441.
Bob was born March 1, 1946, in El Dorado, KS, to Harry and Mary Ruth (Overstreet) Bryant. He moved to Humboldt Nebraska as a young boy after the death of his father. He then moved to Washington, KS in the summer of 1959 after the death of his mother.
He graduated from Washington High School, Washington, KS. He married Janis Bauer in January 1963. They later divorced. On August 20, 2004, he married Vonnie Johnston. She survives of the home.
Bob served in the US Air Force 1963-1967. He was stationed at Forbes AFB in Topeka Kansas with a temporary deployment in France. Bob farmed in the Greenleaf area from 1967 to 1984. During this time he was employed with Greenleaf Grain and Feed, Farmers CO-OP Elevator, and Hoovers Inc of Greenleaf. He served full time in the Army National Guard from 1984 to 1995, served in Hiawatha, Salina, Topeka, and Wichita retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant.
After retiring he worked with Hall Brothers constrution and Don Wait siding, before working with RSMS in a civilian capacity at Fort Riley until his retirement in April of 2009.
Bob was active with the American Legion being a long time member of Shaw Post 235 in Greenleaf. He also held several positions with the American Legion
on the district level including the position of 1st District Commander for one year.
He loved to play sports including fast pitch softball with the Citizens National Bank team of Greenleaf and played in a local men's volleyball league.
Bob was a member of at state championship K-18 baseball team in 1960 in Washington Kansas.
Bob enjoyed being at Milford Lake camping, fishing, hitting golf balls and spending time with his many friends and his two dogs Gracie and Ladybug. Every winter, Bob and Vonnie traveled to Texas. He was a member of Junction City Elks Club and American Legion Post 235.
Bob is survived by his wife, Vonnie, children Marc Bryant, Greenleaf, KS; Lisa Bryant, Linn, KS; Jeff Bryant and wife Kelly, Everest, KS; Kristin Duff and husband Darren, Scott City, KS; Becky Bond and husband Rich, Le Compton, KS; stepson Scott Johnston and wife Rita; 21 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren, and his brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Judy Bryant, Lincoln, NE; sister-in-law Noriko Bryant, Twenty-nine Palms, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Mary Ruth, three older brothers, Harry, Gene and infant Kenneth.
