Mitchell R. Garrett

Mitchell R. Garrett was born on February 26, 1955, in Warren, Arkansas, to the late Woodrow Garrett and Edna Louise Garrett. He departed this life on July 21, 2026, after making his home in Junction City, Kansas.

In his younger years, Mitchell was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church in Warren, Arkansas. The values instilled in him by his parents remained with him throughout his life. They taught him to be strong, outspoken, and willing to stand for what he believed in. Mitchell lived true to himself and never pretended to be anyone other than who he was.

Mitchell built a successful career as an electrical engineer with General Motors–Buick in Flint, Michigan, where he worked for more than 20 years. His intelligence, determination, and strong work ethic were important parts of the life he built.

Affectionately known as “Brotherboy” by his family and “UNC” by his friends, Mitchell had a loving, caring, comical, and unforgettable personality. He was family-centered, strong-minded, and never afraid to speak his truth. He knew how to make people laugh, sometimes without even trying. One of his memorable sayings was, “A little of your coffee gets all over my plate.”

Mitchell enjoyed sewing, fishing, traveling, listening to soul music, and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed many kinds of food, but he had a special love for sweets. Whether he was sharing a story, offering his honest opinion, or making everyone laugh, Mitchell’s presence was always felt.

Mitchell was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beverly J. Garrett; his parents, Woodrow Garrett and Edna Louise Garrett; his brother, Sandford Garrett; and his sisters, Sue Purifoy and Patricia Williams.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving sisters, Gwendolyn S. Bullard and LaFarris L. Risby, CFLE (Kevin); his nieces, Bernadette, Dionne, and Tyronica; his nephews, Darrion, Tory, and Tyrone Jr.; his great-nephews, DJ, Braylon, and Isaiah; his great-nieces, LaToya, Mesha, and Amori; his great-great-nephews, Tavon, Darius, and Zavion; his great-great-niece, Alani; and his great-great-great-niece, Mariannah.

Mitchell also leaves to cherish his memory his special friends, Marcus Craig, Phil Washington, and Norman Carlisle, along with many other relatives and friends whose lives were touched by his humor, honesty, love, and unforgettable spirit.

Although Mitchell had no children of his own, he was surrounded by generations of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and special friends who loved him deeply. His life, laughter, strength, and outspoken nature will remain a lasting part of his family’s story.

Mitchell will be returned to Flint, Michigan, where he will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Beverly J. Garrett.
