Michael L. "Mike" Ryan, passed away on January 4, 2026, at his home in Junction City, Kansas, leaving behind a rich legacy of service and dedication. Born on July 26, 1953, in Abilene, Kansas, he was the son of Lawrence B. and Bernadine (Steele) Ryan.

Mike devoted thirty-four years to the Junction City Fire Department, where he distinguished himself through his unwavering commitment to his community. He retired in 2008 as the fire chief, reflecting the culmination of a career marked by bravery and leadership. Beyond his professional contributions, Mike was actively engaged in local governance, serving on the Junction City Commission from 2013 to 2018, and took pride in his role as Mayor of Junction City in 2015. His advocacy for community health led him to become a founding member of the Live Well Geary County Board, and his commitment to excellence was recognized with a Mark of Excellence Award from the City of Junction City. In 2006, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Phi Theta Kappa, showcasing his continuous pursuit of education and growth. Mike also served on the Kansas Board of Emergency Services and assisted with the KPERS Study Commission for the State of Kansas, contributing to the advancement of public safety and welfare.

An avid lover of life, Mike channeled his energy into various hobbies including fishing, hunting, gardening, and brewing beer. Mike was a devout member of Saint Xavier Catholic Church. He was a charter member of the Junction City Fire Department Union 3309, he embodied the spirit of community involvement, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. 

Mike is survived by his wife, Teresa L. Ryan, of Junction City, Kansas, alongside their son, Shawn Ryan, and his wife Heather, also of Junction City. He cherished his two grandchildren, Bo and Eloise Ryan, who brought immense joy to his life. He leaves behind six loving sisters: Kathleen Lovelace of Abilene, Kansas; Bernadine Nogle and husband Dean of Abilene, Kansas; Cecelia Muckenthaler of St. Marys, Kansas; Frances Hockensmith and husband Bill of Mentor, Kansas; Joan Boller of Manhattan, Kansas; and Marilyn Sidener and husband Brad of Manhattan, Kansas.

Mike was preceded in death by his beloved son, Patrick Ryan; his brother, Charles B. Ryan; and his sister, Louise Ryan.

Visitation services will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Johnson & Mass-Hinitt Funeral Home in Junction City, Kansas. A Rosary will be prayed on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 9:30 AM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the Rosary at 10:00 a.m. with Father Peter O'Donnell as celebrant.

Following the committal service, a reception will be held 12-4 PM at the Milford Lake Convention Center 3710 Farnum Creek Road Milford, Kansas 66514.

Memorial donations are suggested to be given to Live Well Geary County, Junction City Fire Department Union #3309 or to the Junction City Little Theatre. 

Michael L. Ryan will be remembered not only for his remarkable achievements but for the warmth and kindness he provided to his family and community. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the honor of knowing him.
