Marilyn M. Mason

Marilyn Mason, 90, of Wakefield, Kansas passed away on August 16, 2026.

Marilyn was born on July 19, 1936 to Leo and Viola Gustin. After high school, she attended Emporia State University and later taught school for four years. She married the love of her life, Joe “Jay” Mason, in 1956. Once Jay retired from Mason Petroleum Co., they spent time travelling the country, often with close friends. You could find her canning pickles in the summer and making homemade chicken and noodle soup in the winter. Later in life, Marilyn enjoyed shopping trips to Kohl’s with her former daughter-in-law Jeri, where she refused to pay full price for anything. She was sometimes stubborn, which she came by honestly. She was a 10-point pitch player and tried her best to teach the grandkids when to play the 3. Jay and Marilyn enjoyed 69 years of marriage, until they were separated with Jay’s passing in the winter of 2026. They are reunited again, enjoying each other’s company at the kitchen table and watching birds at the feeder.

Together they had two children, Brad Mason and Brenda (Mason) Sherwood, and four grandchildren: Ethan (Jenna) Sherwood of Gladstone, Missouri; Katie Sherwood of Topeka, Kansas; Morgan Mason of Cody, Wyoming; and Joel Mason of Manhattan, Kansas.
