With heavy hearts and loving memories, we announce the passing of Larry “Jabby” Allen, who left us on July 12, 2026, at the age of 66. Born on July 2, 1960, Larry’s spirit left an enduring mark on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
Larry’s life was defined by his remarkable generosity, great work ethic, and steadfast devotion to his family and friends. He embodied the value of caring for others, always ready to offer a helping hand. His physical stature may have been small, but those who knew him marveled that he could “work circles around anybody.” His infectious sense of humor could light up even the hardest of days, especially when working alongside others. Those who spent time with him all recall his joyous laughter and the way he could make any task feel lighter.
Service was at the core of Larry’s life. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1980 and served honorably until 1988. As a military cook, Larry brought comfort and nourishment to his fellow soldiers, serving with distinction in Honduras, Korea, and at Fort Lewis, Washington. He earned numerous awards during his service—including the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, Non-commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, and the Expert Qualification Badge. These commendations were a testament to his skill, commitment, and steadfast reliability.
After his military service, Larry made his home in Junction City, Kansas, dedicating many years to landscaping. His pride in honest work shone through every project, his care for the land as genuine as his care for the people around him. Co-workers and clients alike admired Larry not just for his labor, but for the warmth and humor he brought into every day.
Children held a special place in Larry’s heart. He always ensured that the youngest among them had a hot meal, embodying the nurturing spirit he showed throughout his life. As a renowned cook, both professionally and at home, he brought people together through the simple but profound act of sharing food. Larry was always the first to cook and clean, making sure those around him felt cared for and comforted.
Larry’s life was also defined by his deep ties to family. He is lovingly remembered by his surviving brothers, Johnny Allen, Richard Allen, Roosevelt Allen, John Allen, Lee Allen, Willie Allen, and Earnest Allen; and his sisters, Annie Smith and Mollie Hudson. The Allen family has known great love and some loss: Larry was preceded in death by his brothers Mose Allen, Tommy Allen, and James Allen. Their memory lives on in the stories they shared and the bonds that continue to unite those who remain.
Though Larry’s journey has come to an end, his legacy will endure—in every meal served with kindness, every selfless gesture, every smile shared in adversity. He leaves behind a tapestry of cherished memories, woven into the hearts of his family and friends.
To honor Larry’s life, a visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Johnson & Mass-Hinitt Funeral Home 203 N Washington St, Junction City, KS. A funeral service celebrating his remarkable life will take place Thursday, 11:00 a.m. on July 29, 2027, at JCNaz Church, 1025 S Washington St, Junction City, KS. Pastor Mark Hatcher will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery with military honors.
Larry “Jabby” Allen’s gentle spirit, boundless energy, and deep compassion will be remembered always by those fortunate enough to have known and loved him.
