John H. Peters

At the age of 70, and after a long battle with illness, Captain John H. Peters (U.S. Army, Ret.) shifted his weight into wholeness. Not by death, but by will-a resounding echo of "it is finished."

John was born and raised in Junction City, Kansas, to Harry and Margaret Peters, graduating from St. Xavier Catholic School. Junction City would forever be home, no matter where the Army sent him. He and his wife, Carol, were married for 53 years. They retired in Junction City, built a home, and lived out the long, faithful dance of "in sickness and in health."

Anyone who knew John loved him. He invested love deeply, knowing full well a return would come at just the right moment. He was a devoted husband, doted on his wife whenever possible, and was the kind of dad all kids desire. He used his words with wisdom and caution, knowing a softly spoken word or action would go further than reactionary frustration.

John spent his career in the Army, stepping away only to earn his Bachelor's degree at Kansas State University and a Masters of Divinity at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary while chasing down the dream of becoming a Chaplain-a dream that he wrapped himself up in, and flourished as, ultimately retiring at the rank of Captain. He loved God and others as if it were a Great Commission. Sickness was the only thing that came between himself and the dream; though, if you ever sat with him during those 30 years, you know the truth of the matter: his ministry never stopped.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Carol, and his siblings, Donald Peters and Janet Peters. His three children clearly took the command to "be fruitful and multiply" to heart. His legacy continues through them, Jennifer Ormord (Heath), Robyn Duncan (Geoffrey), and John Peters (Angie); his grandchildren, Gillian Banta (Chris), Cosette Ormord (Isaiah), Arianna Huber (Jon), Delanny Cherry (Christian), Shawnna Stammer (Zeke), Jonathan, Chelsa Williamson (Logan), Titus Duncan, Jordan Duncan, Kody Duncan, Keyan Duncan, Dylan Peters, Elyse Bowman (Derek), Saydi Peters, Autym Smith (Jonathan), Lilly Peters, and Zayne Peters (Sarenity); 14 cherished great-grandchildren, with another on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Margaret Peters, and his mother and father-in-law, June and JC Poe.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 6th at 11:00 AM at Johnson & Mass-Hinitt Funeral Home. Following the service, John will be laid to rest with military honors at the Kansas State Veterans' Cemetery in Manhattan, Kansas starting at 1:00pm.

Memorial Contributions are suggested to be given to Unedited Life Association, 902 N. Jefferson St, Junction City, Kansas.
