Nancy Joan Newbury, 83, of Junction City, Kansas passed away Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas. Joan was born May 15, 1928 to Randall C. and Marguerite D. Stephens and raised in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. Joan was married to David N. Newbury for thirty years. At the time of his death in 1986, Dr. Newbury was Deputy Superintendent of Hazel Park, Michigan schools.
Joan graduated from Sunbury High School and Linden Hall Junior College in Lititz, Pennsylvania. She later attended Boston University. She served four years as the president of the Board of Managers at Oakland YWCA in Clawson, Michigan and was elected to the Metro Detroit YWCA Board of Directors where she served eight years on the Finance Committee.
Joan was an active member of St. Paul U.C.C. in Warren, Michigan where she served on the Consistory and was a chairperson of the Membership Committee for many years, and served as a greeter and mentor. Joan is survived by son, Stephen P. Newbury and grandson David J. Newbury of Junction City, Kansas; nieces, Jill Spradlin, Margaret Nash, Barbara Mullin and Beth Aducci; nephew, Mark Stephens; four great nieces and six great nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Randall and Marguerite Stephens; sisters, Phyllis Salesky and Joyce Mullin; brother, Randall Stephens; and niece, Patricia Mullin.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Pennsylvania.
