Remembering Jessie Petty

Jessie Petty passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, surrounded by the family she loved so deeply.

Jessie shared a long and devoted marriage with her late husband, CW4 Henry L. Petty Sr. Their life together brought them to the Fort Riley and Junction City area in 1969, where they raised their family and became valued members of the community.

She spent many years working in civil service at Fort Riley before retiring. She also remained active at Second Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess and supported numerous church activities.

Jessie had a special way of making people feel welcome. She was known for her quick sense of humor, generous spirit, and memorable meals. Her home was a gathering place where there was always room for one more person at the table.

She loved fashion and carried herself with elegance and confidence. Her style reflected the grace and personality that made her unforgettable to those who knew her. Jessie’s signature fashion statement was her collection of hats. She could transform even a woven basket into something worthy of a Paris fashion premiere.

Jessie grew up in Madison, Illinois, as the daughter of Jessie Rhodes and Lucy Hilton Rhodes. She graduated from Lovejoy High School and, as a young woman, sang in the choir and played piano at Friendship Baptist Church.

She married Henry L. Petty on June 30, 1956. Together, they built a life filled with family, travel, military service, adventure, and many lasting memories.

Jessie leaves to cherish her memory her children, Cheryl Ferguson; Henry Petty Jr. and his wife, Marjorie; Derek Petty; and DeAndre Petty. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Dashea Petty and Dominique Bartholomew and her husband, Clayton; her great-grandchildren, Kaleb Gant and Kaylani and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

Jessie was the heart of her family and a trusted friend to many. She will be deeply missed, but the warmth, laughter, strength, and love she shared will continue through the lives of everyone who knew her.
