James H. Tate

James H. Tate, age 79, passed away at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community on August 8, 2026. Born in Elberton, Georgia, on December 21, 1946, and graduated from Blackwell Memorial High School in 1964. Some of his fondest memories included attending school and living on Pine Street in Elberton, Georgia.

James was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Carolyn C. Tate, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, memories, and family; his father, Willie Burton; his mother, Willie Mae Tate, and his sister, Earline Anderson.

James is survived by his two beloved daughters, Tiffany Tate-Collins (Charles “Chuck” Collins), and Tagan Newbill (Perry Newbill Jr.). He was especially devoted to his grandsons, PerryJames Carter Newbill, and Mitchell Tate Collins. He loved them deeply and took great pride in their lives and accomplishments. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Connie Smith, of Athens, Georgia, nephews, James Harris, Eric Smith, and Dante Smith, and other close family members and friends who held a special place in his heart.

Among his treasured friendships were Bishop James Johnson and Alice Johnson, Regina and Robert Jackson, and Jonetta Taylor, friendships that spanned more than 40 years. These enduring relationships were a meaningful part of his life.

A lifelong member of New Church of the Living God, Mr. Tate was a founding member of the church and dedicated many years to serving his church community. He served as a Board Member for New Church of the Living God and remained committed to his faith.

A proud and dedicated military veteran, James H. Tate served 27 years in the United States Army. Throughout his military career, he saw combat in the Dominic Republican and Vietnam. He received numerous accolades and commendations for his distinguished service to his country.

Following his military career, he continued his commitment to serving his community as Executive Director of the Junction City Housing Authority. In that role, he dedicated himself to helping others and making a difference in the lives of the individuals and families he served. His leadership and commitment to his community were an important part of his legacy.

He was a true man’s man, known for his strength, loyalty, hard work, generosity, humor, and unmistakable personality. He valued good friends, meaningful conversations, and taking care of the people he loved. Above all, he was a devoted father, grandfather, husband, family member, and friend.

And, as he would often say, “I’m back in the high life,” inspired by Steve Winwood’s song. For him, those words reflected the joy of living, the blessings God placed in his life, and his ability to find light even in difficult times. And now, we can imagine him truly back in the high life, reunited with his beloved wife and resting in the loving presence of God.

His life was one of service, love, faith, family, and perseverance. His legacy will live on through the people he loved, the community he served, and the many lives he touched along the way.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.

In recognition of his life, the following services will be held: James will lay in state at Johnson & Mass-Hinitt Funeral Home, 203 N Washington St, Junction City, KS 66441, on August 12, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Visitation will be hosted at New Church of The Living God, 1315 West Ash Street, Junction City, on August 13, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a Homegoing Celebration at the same location from 11:00 a.m. To conclude the commemoration, a Graveside Service will be held at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, Manhattan, KS 66503, on August 13, 2026, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
