Inge Marianne (Gunzler) Smith, 82, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away in Kansas City, Missouri, on February 10, 2026.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on February 28, 2026 from 5-7pm at Johnson & Mass-Hinitt Funeral Home.

Inge was born in Hochst, Germany, on October 10, 1943 to Wilhelm and Gretel Gunzler. She attend school in Unterliederbach, Germany and was a high school graduate. She moved to the United States in 1966.

Inge was married to Willie James Smith on April 21, 1965. They were married for 17 years. After their divorce, Inge and Willie remained friends.

She worked as a custodian for 30 years on Fort Riley, Kansas. She enjoyed good soul music, dancing, cooking, sewing and spending time with family and friends. Grandma's house was always the gathering place for the family to celebrate and spend time together. Most importantly, her famous basement parties that lasted until... Her most notable dish was her German potato salad, which was always a request of anyone that stopped by the house. Her daughters try hard to continue making this traditional German dish. 

Inge was always a glamour girl and loved her Leopard prints and sparkly sequined attire, accompanied by a pair of high heels. Her warm and infectious smile and loving personality made everybody feel welcomed. 

Inge will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Inge lived in Junction City, Kansas for over five decades. In July of 2024, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri to be closer to her daughter Marion.

Inge is survived by her ex-husband, Willie; daughters Monica (Ronni) Smith of Junction City, Marion Smith of Kansas City, Missouri and Dawn Basemore of Topeka; grandchildren Robert, Nicole, Marquas, DaNeale, Courtni, Dominique, and Isaiah; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister Gabriele Gunzler; her twin brother Manfred Gunzler; and many other family and close friends.

Inge was preceded in death by her parents; brother Dieter Gunzler; and grandmother Marianne Schneider.

The family of Inge M. Smith wishes to thank all of our family and friends for their support throughout this time, as well as the staff at Faith Hospice of Kansas City, KU Medical Center, and Phoenix Home Care.
