George Fortner

A Mass of Christian Burial for George W. Fortner, 58, Junction City will be 10 a.m., Friday, February 29, 2008, at St. Xavier Catholic Church with Father Al Brungardt officiating. Burial will follow the service at St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Funeral Chapel 203 N. Washington Street Thursday, February 28, 2008, 6-8:00 p.m. with a vigil service to be held at 7:30 p.m. George passed away Monday, February 25, 2008, in Dickinson County. Memorial contributions may be given to the Coronado Area Council Boy Scouts of America P.O. Box 912 Salina, Kansas 67402 or to the Knights of Columbus c/o Mr. Tom Grelk 119 S. Jefferson Junction City, Kansas 66441.



George Fortner was born August 6, 1949, the son of Phyllis Guise.



George was a welder having worked for various construction companies including almost 20 years as a welder at Fort Riley Building 8100. His iron work can be seen throughout the community with various businesses. He also worked for Mobile Travelers. He was a United States Army Veteran. He was very active with the Boy Scouts and served as a leader for many years. He was a member of St. Xavier Catholic Church. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Riders. He served as a Volunteer Fire Chief for the Grandview Plaza Fire Department for many years.



He married Verna Senesac April 12, 1969, in Hays, Kansas. She survives.



He is survived by two sons, Larry Fortner and his wife Tara of Monroe City, Missouri and Eric Fortner and his wife Annie of Cockeysville, Maryland. He is also survived by his daughters, Becky Buckman and her husband Dan of Monroe City, Missouri; Tammy Humbard and her husband Don of Waldorf, Maryland; Paula Thompson and her husband Dale of Junction City, Kansas; Trina Langford of Overland Park, Kansas and Dee Dee Fortner of Mission, Kansas. He is also survived by his sister Frankie Lou Shook and his grandchildren, Shane Powell, Shawn Powell, Christian Thompson, Corey Alvarez, Chad Alvarez, Cody Alvarez, Chance Humbard, Lawson Langford, Sheena Stone, Whitney Buckman, Audrey Fortner, Stevie Powell, Ashley Humbard, Mercedes Fortner, Kaylee Fortner, Lauren Fortner and Riley Fortner.



Casket bearers will be John Day, Randy Day, Art Potter, Jim Potter, Wesley "Payday" Paytao, Tom Regleman, Bob Miller and Stacey Cooke. The honorary casket bearers will be his grandchildren.
