Emma Louise Manion, a devoted educator and cherished member of her community, passed away on May 24, 2026, in Junction City, Kansas. Born February 21, 1929 in Chanute, Kansas, Emma's life was marked by an enduring commitment to education and family, leaving a legacy of love, encouragement and support.
Emma was a graduate of Chanute High School's class of 1947, furthering her education at Chanute Junior College before earning her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Elementary Education and Media from Kansas State University and Emporia State. Her professional life was dedicated to shaping young minds; she taught second grade at Lincoln Elementary for 27 years before continuing as school librarian until her retirement in 2007. Emma's passion for reading and learning was profound -- she loved encouraging her students to embrace the joy of reading, a testament to her belief in education as a lifelong journey.
In 1956, Emma and her beloved husband, Vernon R. Manion, whom she married in Chanute, Kansas, relocated to Junction City. Their marriage spanned an extraordinary 70 years, working together to enrich the lives of family, friends and students.
Beyond the classroom, Emma found joy in roller skating, an interest that brought her delight and youthful exuberance throughout her life. When Milford Lake opened, water skiing and camping provided another avenue of enjoyment, and found added pleasure by involving willing participations of all ages in those activities. She was also an avid fan of J.C. Bluejays, K-State Wildcats and KC Chiefs football.
Emma's familiar ties were an essential part of her identity. She is survived by her husband, Vernon R. Manion; daughter B.J. Manes and husband Ross; brother Don Haynes; sister-in-law Donna Haynes; and a host of nieces and nephews and cousins who will carry forward her memory. Close family friend Cheryl Hudson also remains a part of Emma's circle of love and support. Emma was preceded in death by her parents, Byrle B. and Ruth Haynes; grandson Jason A. Bokelman; sisters Lois Claus, Margaret Haynes, and Carol Haynes; brother Ron Haynes; and sister-in-law Helen Haynes.
Emma's proudest accomplishments were her dedicated career as a public school educator and the close-knit family she nurtured with care and devotion. Her life was a testament to the values of kindness, perseverance, and genuine human connection. Those who knew Emma remember her as a guiding light, a steadfast supporter and a woman whose love enriched the lives of many.
Her presence will be deeply missed, but the principles she lived by and the impact she made will remain enduring inspirations to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Emma's legacy is one of warmth, dedication, and an unyielding commitment to the betterment of others through love and dedication.
