Edward Martin Smith

Edward Martin Smith passed away on August 22, 2026 in Topeka, Kansas. Ed was born on October 29, 1946 in South Haven, Michigan to John and Eileen Smith. 

Ed married the love of his life Cora (Patti) Bell on November 18, 1975 in Orlando, Florida. They shared over 50 years together until her passing just three months earlier on May 18, 2026. He just couldn't live without her. 

Ed was a kind of man whose presence made everyone feel safe. A protector by nature, a leader by example and a teacher at heart. He possess a brilliant mind and an endless well of knowledge that he generously shared with anyone who needed guidance. No question was ever too big or too small; somehow he always had wisdom, insight, or encouragement to offer. His charisma drew people in, and his honesty earned respect , and his kindness left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Whether serving as a sergeant first class E7 in the United States Army, working as a police officer or simply helping someone navigate life‘s challenges, he approach every role with integrity, strength, and unwavering dedication.

Ed was devoted to family. He loved his wife with a deep loyalty that inspired everyone around them. Many admire the remarkable bond they shared. He gave his whole heart to being a brother, husband, father and grandfather, finding joy and caring for the people he loved. His daughters and grandsons were blessed by his guidance and the values he instilled continuing to shape who they are today.

All the hats he wore throughout his life the most important meaningful was being a father and a best friend. Words can never fully capture the extraordinary person he was, but his love wisdom and legacy will live on in all of us forever.

Cremation has occurred and burial at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery in Manhattan will take place at a later date.
