On October 5, 2025, Doyle Laverne Winters passed away surrounded by the comforts of his home in Junction City, Kansas. He was 96 years old.
On June 29, 1929, Doyle was born to the late Frank and Ophelia Winters in Mangum, Oklahoma. The family soon moved to Southeastern Colorado where Doyle would spend the majority of his primary and secondary school years. He graduated from Kim High School in 1947. Notably, Doyle was always mature and responsible, even when driving a school bus while in high school!
Doyle married his high school sweetheart, Viola Fulbright, in 1948. They went on to build a family with the addition of five children over the next two decades: Rhonda in 1949, Wesley in 1952, Tina in 1961, Bradley in 1963, and Sharla in 1969. Doyle had numerous professions during his lifetime --- farmer, rancher, carpenter, and businessman. He farmed and ranched in Baca County, Colorado, worked as a carpenter in Apple Valley, California, and owned WW Feeds in LaJunta, Colorado. He enjoyed each of these stages in his life. Of all his roles, his favorites were as a loving husband, dad, and grandpa!
After retiring, Doyle and Viola enjoyed traveling, collecting midcentury modern vases, and spending many summers in LaVeta, Colorado. In 2022, Doyle’s health issues brought them to Junction City, Kansas, where he would live out his days.
Doyle is survived and missed by his wife Viola of 77 years, daughter Tina (Jay), son Brad (Danette), and daughter Sharla; 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He was sadly preceded in death by daughter Rhonda in 1998, son Wesley in 2021, and cousin Treva Haney in 2022. A host of extended family and friends will miss his presence in their lives. Doyle was a kind, generous, and forgiving man who loved a good joke and conversation filled with laughter.
A family memorial service will be held at a later date.
