Dixie E. Rahorst

d. May 3, 2025

Junction City

Dixie Rahorst nee’ Dixon transitioned to a new existence on May 3, 2025. She was born in a bustling Northeast Oklahoma town, that was a center for petroleum and mining during the roaring 20’s. She grew up in the roaring 1920s and the depression era of the 1930s that followed. Life was not easy for the family of eight children that the father had abandoned. She was the youngest of the eight children spread across two decades. In the thirties, she was horrified by being hugged and kissed by Alf Landon at one of his political rallies, when he ran for President in 1936 and equally amazed by the experience of visiting Cincinnati and seeing the lights of the city. She had very little idea that she would one day be the mother of three sons.

By 1941, she was an adult working woman contributing to the war efforts and raising money for War Bonds. Early in the war years she meet and married a soldier who had joined the Cavalry at Fort Riley many years earlier. She had her first son, Glenn Rahorst, Jr. during the war and her second son, William Rahorst right after the war ended. She would later have a third, Wendell Rahorst.

Throughout their marriage her husband Glenn was gone for many years both during WW2, the Korean War, and other deployments. She always returned home to work during these periods of separation. All the sons were born in her home town and delivered by the same family doctor who delivered Dixie.

In 1956, the entire family deployed to West Germany for three years. It was a good time for the Rahorst family. Wherever the family landed, Dixie always kept a warm comfortable home for her sons and her quite often absent husband.

In 1966, Dixie and Glenn retired to Junction City, Kansas to be near retiree services offered by Fort Riley, Kansas. They were active in the Eagles and other service organizations. After Glenn passed in 1981, Dixie became even more active in the community. She was president of the Eagles Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, President of the local women’s bowling organization, and served on the Fort Riley Commanding General’s local civilian advisory group. She was also an active member with the local First Baptist Church.

She finally relocated to the Brookdale Assisted Living Community in 2023.
