Denise was born on February 24, 1925 in Junction City, Kansas to Ralph A. and Bessie E. (Durbon) Martin. She spent her childhood years in Junction City growing up on the 400 block of South Adams Street. She attended Franklin Elementary School and noted that her kindergarten teacher was named Miss Rough, but "she was not like her name sounds, very sweet personality."
During her youth, Denise and her brother Ralph helped their father at the family business, S.A. Durbon Furniture Store. The store was located at Ninth and Washington. While attending the Junction City High School at Ninth and Adams, Denise would often walk to the store after school. She remarked on the difficulty of getting across Washington Street because of the traffic during those years. In addition to furniture the store sold appliances, such as refrigerators. Denise talked about being so happy when they finally got a refrigerator for their own home and got rid of the icebox.
After graduating from Junction City High School, Denise attended Baker University. She was "always interested in learning new things". Denise was a proud member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and graduated from Baker University in 1947 with a B.A. in Business Administration and minors in Sociology and Music. Later that same year she married Harry Emerson Weed. (They later divorced) The couple had two children, Linda Denise and Mary Clarice (both graduated from Junction City High School). Mr. Weed was a minister, and the family moved to different locations in North East Kansas to accommodate his assignments. They eventually returned to Junction City. Denise served as a Girl Scout leader for her daughters' troupe and a Red Cross volunteer. Her love of learning also led her to be a multi-year member of the Kansas Adult Education Association. Denise had been a member of the First United Methodist Church. Denise moved to Valley View Senior Life in 2006.
She is survived by her daughter Linda, nieces, and nephews.
Denise was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Bessie Martin, her daughter Mary Clarice, and her brother Ralph.
