Cora Patricia “Patti” Smith, a beloved elementary school teacher and cherished family matriarch, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026, in Chapman, Kansas. Born on June 18, 1946, in Dallas, Texas, Patti’s life was marked by a profound dedication to education, a joyful spirit, and unwavering love for her family and community.
Patti’s remarkable teaching career spanned over 45 years, during which she touched the lives of countless young students. A devoted educator, she graduated from Kansas State University with a Master’s degree in education, a testament to her commitment to excellence in teaching. She retired in Junction City, Kansas, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, encouragement, and academic inspiration.
Known affectionately as Patti, she was a happy-go-lucky soul—friendly to all and an enemy to none. Patti embraced life with an infectious enthusiasm, always seeking joy and laughter. Her cheerful disposition and warm heart made her not only an exceptional teacher but also the best grandmother one could hope for.
Patti and her husband, Edward Smith, shared a loving marriage since November 18, 1975, when they were united in Orlando, Florida. Together, they built a beautiful family that was the center of Patti’s world. She was deeply proud of her daughters, Jenni Bazan and Erin Smith, and Erin’s partner, John Murphy. Her grandsons, Vaughn, Gavin, Brock, Max, and Jake, brought immense happiness to her life, and her role as their grandmother was one she cherished dearly.
Among her treasured memories were the weekly shopping trips with her daughters, a simple yet special tradition that followed her meticulous efforts in organizing her classrooms. Beyond her work and family, Patti found joy in reading, swimming, and being outdoors, appreciating the beauty of nature with a generous spirit. A true animal lover, her compassion extended beyond people to the creatures she held dear.
Patti was preceded in death by her parents, Adrian and Mary Bell, whose love and guidance helped shape the remarkable woman she became.
Her proudest accomplishments were not only her distinguished teaching career but also the vibrant family she nurtured and the countless young minds she inspired. Patti’s legacy is one of love, education, and joy—a shining example for all who knew her.
Patti Smith’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of her family and friends, but the warmth of her memory will forever remain a light in their lives. Her kindness, laughter, and unwavering spirit will be remembered with deep respect and affection by all who had the privilege to know her.
