Chong Hui West
January 23, 1942 — June 12, 2019
Chong Hui West, 77, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2019, at the Korean Church of Manhattan 511 Westview Drive Manhattan, KS. Burial will follow the service at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Korean Church of Manhattan.
Chong was born January 23, 1942, in Daegu, South Korea the daughter of Sul I.Chong and Ri Son Kwon. On May 9, 1966, Chong married Larry G. West in Seoul, South Korea.
Chong West devoted her life to her husband, children, extended family, friends and the community. She was generous with her love and sacrificed herself to make the lives of those around her better. Those that she touched were enriched beyond measure; she took people under her wings as Jesus would.
As a homemaker, Chong did what was needed to care for her beloved family and friends. She wore many hats, both literally (she loved wearing different hats) and figuratively, from being a small business owner to a church deacon, bookkeeper, counselor and choir member. She was strong, yet humble and welcoming, and was a breath of sunshine to all those around her. Chong was devoted to God, praying and studying the bible faithfully. She celebrated her blessings and put her heart and soul into her endeavors, whether it be raising her children, tending to her garden, or preparing traditional Korean food. She was a joyous spirit who loved to sing and dance.
Those who knew her are used to hearing her notable phrases: "don't put yourself down," "eat more," "go to churchee," "you so lucky I like you." She loved watching the Weather Channel, Animal Planet, and Korean drama. Often, she would reinterpret the weather forecast and make more accurate predictions for her friends, and especially for her pepper plants.
She was the epitome of her favorite scripture, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered,
It keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with
the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
Chong lived a full life and was ready to be with God. She is loved and will be missed by many.
Chong is survived by her husband Larry G. West; one son, Jay H. West and his wife Amy Sakasegawa of San Jose, CA; two daughters, Laura Lehnert and her husband Dustin of Sammamish, WA and Juanitta Zimmerman and her husband Brian of Livermore, CA; one brother, Chan Su Chong; eight grandchildren, Alex, Amanda, Nikki, Alle, Christian, Jacob, Nathan and Sammuel; two great-granddaughters, Jasmine and Adele.
