Betty J. Hakala, a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on November 5, 2025, in Junction City, Kansas, at the age of 91. Born on December 10, 1933, in Plattville, Wisconsin, as one of six children to Axel and Mabel Nelson.
Betty married Edward Hakala on May 31, 1952, in Brantwood, Wisconsin. They spent many summers at Brantwood Co-op Park, where the beauty of nature surrounded them. Their life was enriched by their fondness for family card games, particularly canasta and poker, which provided countless hours of enjoyment and bonding.
Betty found joy in every season, embracing the beauty around her. She not only enjoyed nature but also took a liking to one special companion, her adopted stray cat, Calico, who brought her comfort and companionship over the years.
Betty is survived by her children: Duane Hakala, Beverly (Larry) Hanson, Cindy Ullmer, Cheryl (Jeff Sr.) Underhill, and Brenda (Rod) Gfeller. She also leaves behind her sister, Gladys Johnas, along with a legacy of 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Hakala, who passed away on February 28, 2010, her daughter Annette Krinhop, and sons, Steven Hakala and Alan Hakala.
Friends and family will gather to honor Betty during a visitation at Johnson & Mass-Hinitt Funeral Home, located at 203 N Washington St, Junction City, KS. The visitation will be held on November 13, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
